Sometimes when designing a space you are working with the architecture. In this home the brief was to push against it. My decor loving, creative clients were moving from America to Johannesburg for 2 years and had struggled to find a furnished rental that felt like them. The compromise was renting an empty modern home and then injecting it with as much colour, life, warmth and organic elements that budget would allow. This meant a repaint and luckily the landlord was willing. The cold blue grey walls went a lovely shade of Dulux Minimalist White. Floor to ceiling linen-like cream curtains then went up in the voluminous rooms to give the interior a finished off canvas to build on top of. The lighting in the home was also too cold and modern and so I incorporated oak pendants, textured fabric shades, new track lighting and an enormous 15 light custom chandelier that had to be designed and manufactured to create enough light in the double volume interior. A final special aspect of this interior was the designing and manufacturing of huge 1.5m by 2.5m artworks to fill the large empty walls. I chose simple pieces and printed on linen-like textured fabric to add to the layered feel of the interior.
